Fr. Kevin O'Neill, Superior General of the Missionary Society of St. Columban, has issued a statement on behalf of the organisation in response to last week's announcement that the United States would withdraw from the Paris Climate Change Agreement.
Last Thursday, June 1st, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would no longer abide by the climate change accord. The Paris Climate Change Agreement was finalized in November 2015, following much discussion, negotiation and debate. It included the principal aim of keeping the increase in global average temperatures to 'well below two degrees'.
Fr. Kevin O'Neill warned that failure to address climate change will 'exacerbate forced migration, food insecurity, conflict, and disease'. He added that the most vulnerable of our world are set to shoulder the greatest proportion of the climate change burden - despite contributing the least to climate change.
He concluded the statement by calling on 'nations, churches and people of good will to work for a just and sustainable solution' to climate change.
