Holy Week 2016

As we enter the most important week of the Christian liturgical year, we reflect on the symbolism and meaning of the events which will take place in the coming days.

Palm Sunday marked the beginning of Holy Week and the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Palm was a symbol of triumph and victory in those times. People celebrated as God had promised a Messiah to them. Christ came to us to establish God’s peaceful Kingdom.

On Holy Thursday we read about Jesus washing the feet of his 12 apostles. Jesus got down on his hands and knees to serve us. He asks us to do the same. Service of others is the fruit of love.

On Good Friday we will remember Jesus’ crucifixion and death. It is the only day in the year when we do not celebrate Mass but we gather to recall Jesus’ passion and venerate the cross.

As night falls on Holy Saturday, we celebrate the Easter Vigil with the initiation of new members to the Catholic community. We also reaffirm our commitment to continue Jesus’ work of building God’s Kingdom through love.

On Easter Sunday we mark the resurrection of Jesus and we are reminded that every Sunday is an Easter and every communion is a resurrection.

In His life, Jesus demonstrated great love, service and sacrifice. He asks you and I to do the same.

‘As I have done for you, you should also do’

John 13:15
