Marking OLA Foundation Day on Monday 1st May

From our inception in 1876, we were known as the ‘African Mission Sisters’ before changing to the 'Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles' on 1st of May 1901.

Our founder, Fr Augustine Planque.

Our Founder, Fr. Augustine Planque chose the name, the ‘Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles’ for the Institute, a title so dear to his heart because he felt it expressed the essence of its Spirituality – that of the Cenacle, the apostles gathered together in pray with Mary the Mother of Jesus on the eve of Pentecost awaiting the outpouring of the Spirit empowering them to Go Out to the whole world proclaiming the Kingdom of God.

Initially from our inception in 1876, we were known as the ‘African Mission Sisters’. Fr. Planque made several trips to Rome and it would seem that while he was praying in the Church of the Holy Apostles near the ancient Coliseum that he was inspired to ask Propaganda Fide to retain this name when granting its approval for the Institute on the 1st of May 1901. May 1st coincides with the beginning of the 'Month of Mary'.

The OLA Feast Day is celebrated on the eve of Pentecost. This year it falls on Saturday 3rd June.
