Season of Creation
Pope Francis calls for us to take good care of creation for future generations.
In a video released to coincide with World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on September 1st (see above), Pope Francis speaks of finding a new way of living which will protect our planet for future generations:
"The relationship between poverty and the fragility of the planet requires a new way of managing the economy and measuring progress, conceiving a new way of living. We need a change that unites us all, free from the slavery of consumerism. This month, I make a special request: That we take good care of creation - a gift freely given - cultivating and protecting it for future generations."
The World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation was first proclaimed by the Orthodox Church in 1989. Since then, many Christian churches have joined. Pope Francis instituted this special day for the Roman Catholic Church last year, 2015. The Season of Creation (also known as 'Creation Time') runs from September 1st until October 4th (Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi). During this time Christians are invited to pray and care for creation.
