Sr. Olga and her missionary work in Argentina
Of Ivorian origin and a Sister of Our Lady of Apostles, Sr. Olga has always held the belief that strong missionary women devote their lives to God, while continuing with missionary work which is needed. Sr. Olga feels a strong connection with her fellow missionary sisters.
She said, “an experience that has always supported me in my journey has been and continues to be, the evidence of our first sisters”.
In 2012 she left the Ivory Coast for a mission in Argentina. Upon arrival she had to meet many challenges. These included a new mission, a new culture and a different language.
Sr. Olga travelled to the center of Argentina to the community of Cordoba. The city of Cordoba is in the middle of Argentina, and is the second largest city there.
The Community of Cordoba is made up of several sisters including Sr. Edel, and Nigerian nurse Mariela.
Once in Argentina, she began a course in Spanish for three months in Buenos Aires. She learned a Spanish language version called "castellano", which can vary from the typical Spanish language.
Sr. Olga has said of her experience that, “I live in one of the poorest neighbourhoods of the city called "Villa El Libertador". As in all countries of the world, "poverty" also expresses that which causes poverty: insecurity, drugs, alcohol, elderly, isolated, women and children without assistance, without protection”.
Her work is very varied. She represents the NDA community of the parish pastoral council, and is working as part of a community (CEB). In that neighbourhood she also visits the elderly as well as those living alone. Along with those activities she regularly visits patients who are terminally ill. She feels that every mission is unique. She thinks the distinction not only stems from the differences between people, but the attitude with which the missionary has.
Sr. Olga continues to be a devout believer in the power of mission. She contemplates the importance of mission being a place where ones relationship with God takes on a new meaning, which can help us to live each day with new eyes.
