Preparing for Graduation at Maria Centre

Graduation to take place on June 4th.

Three months after commencing classes at the Maria Centre, the first group of women are now preparing for their June 4th graduation. Those who are due to graduate have attended skills training workshops aimed at empowering the women at the camp for Interally Displaced People (IDP) in Abuja, Nigeria. The event, which coincides with the feast of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will be followed by a sale of crafts produced by the women over the last few months. Proceeds from the sale will be used to cover some of the set-up costs for those starting a small craft-making business and to offer opportunities to enable the graduants to continue rebuilding their lives. The Maria Centre opened on International Women's Day last March in response to the great numbers of women who fled to Abuja to escape the Boko Haram war in northeastern Nigeria. The OLA Sisters are involved in running the centre.
