The Cork Conference on Intergenerational Climate Justice took place in City Hall last week and OLA were thrilled to have been a part of the organising committee for this event.

The event was a huge success with teenage representatives from schools across Cork in attendance.

Some 200 people were in attendance, and in keeping with the intergenerational aspect, almost half were teenagers, and a substantial representation of elders.

One of the highlights of the day was the address by President Michael D Higgins in which he highlighted the many facets of life that are impacted by Climate Change, including forced migration, conflict and violence. The world is “at the precipice of a global ecological catastrophe,” he warned.

Other speakers included: Denise Cahill, Healthy Cities Cork; Saoi O'Connor

Student Activist; Prof. Peadar Kirby, Clough Jordan Eco Village; Dr Lorna Gold, Trócaire; Fr Seán Healy, Social Justice Ireland; Margaret Desmond, Environmental Protection Agency; Dr Tracey Skillington, University of Cork

The conference was highly interactive, giving delegates an opportunity to brainstorm actions to be implemented, from small, personal acts, to suggestions for national actions.
