Faith and Development

Jesus had a sense of mission to poor and marginalised people. In St Luke’s Gospel, at the beginning of his public ministry, Jesus stood up in the synagogue at Nazareth and read from the Prophet Isaiah:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

Since the beginnings of the OLA congregation, OLA Sisters have been working in Development. In recent years, there has been a greater awareness and recognition of the contribution of missionaries in the area of Development. OLA’s have contributed their fair share through the years in many areas and continue to do so, working to improve the quality of life of the people with whom they work.

In order to live more fully the prophetic dimension of Religious Life and in the awareness of the immensity of the needs of our world today, we the OLA Sisters continue to make explicit option for the vulnerable and those on the periphery.
