Last week, on 31 July 2024, Ardfoyle Convent had the pleasure of welcoming the Irish Ambassador to Nigeria, Peter Ryan. Ambassador Ryan, who began his tenure in January, was warmly received by our District Leader, Sister Mary Crowley.
During his visit, Ambassador Ryan spoke passionately about the enduring relationship between Ireland and Nigeria, a bond significantly shaped by the invaluable contributions of Irish missionaries. He shared that long before Nigeria gained independence in 1960, these dedicated individuals played a pivotal role in enhancing health and education across the country. The hospitals, clinics, schools, and community organisations they established continue to serve the Nigerian people to this day.
Ambassador Ryan also mentioned that wherever he goes in Nigeria, people are excited when they hear he is from Ireland. They all recognise and appreciate Ireland because of the Irish missionaries, who have been wonderful ambassadors of their country.
Ambassador Ryan, deeply committed to his role, emphasised the lasting legacy of the missionaries and the profound connections between the two nations. He expressed his dedication to building on this strong foundation, aiming to foster even greater cooperation and understanding.
Our Sisters were honoured to host Ambassador Ryan and we look forward to further strengthening the ties between Ireland and Nigeria, continuing the mission of support and partnership initiated by the early Irish missionaries.
