Cork, Ireland – The Fifth Cork Conference on Intergenerational Climate Justice will take place online via Zoom on Thursday, 17 October 2024, from 9:00am to 1:00pm. This year’s event, titled “Climate Breakdown – Who Cares?” will explore the impact of climate change through an intergenerational lens.

Since 2019, the Cork Conference has provided a platform for schools, community groups, and experts to engage in dialogue about climate justice. The conference has expanded each year, offering a space for diverse perspectives and actionable insights on climate issues.

The 2024 conference will focus on how different generations experience and respond to climate change in a time of rising fatigue with climate activism. The event aims to rejuvenate interest and momentum in climate action through thoughtful discussion and practical strategies.

Featured speakers and panelists include:

  • Aoife Daly, expert in children’s environmental rights from University College Cork
  • John Barry, Professor of Green Political Economy at Queen’s University Belfast
  • Salome Mumba, water management expert with Trocaire Malawi
  • Maria Young, representative from Green Spaces for Health
  • Denise Cahill, from Healthy Cities Cork
  • Akshita Gupta and Niamh Purcell, youth climate activists with the Youth Climate Justice EU project at UCC
  • Ersha Naheed, student and climate advocate from St. Vincent’s Secondary School
  • Katie Sisk-Duggan, student at Ursuline College Blackrock, environmental advocate, and former UN speaker on children’s rights

The conference will feature interactive sessions designed to foster discussion and provide practical approaches for addressing climate challenges, while also tackling the issue of climate fatigue.

Organised by The Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA), Society of African Missions (SMA), the Social and Health Education Project (SHEP), Elders for Earth, the North Cathedral and Blackpool Parish Climate Justice Group, St. Anne’s Shandon Justice Group, and Eco-UNESCO, the event aims to facilitate a meaningful exchange on climate action and reinvigorate collective environmental efforts.
